Library Renovations Update

If you haven’t already seen the renovated first floor of the library, I invite you to stop by and take a look.  You will be amazed at the transformation!  Our students love the new space – one commented “the library rocks.”  Take a look at the video written, directed, filmed and edited by Ien Chi about Oxford’s 21st century library. Library Video - Hub of Living and Learning.

We must give tremendous credit to Hugh Tarbutton, Jr. for urging us to think creatively in the current economic environment, providing the resources to complete this “Proof-of-Concept” project, and helping us see the possibilities for the new Library and Academic Commons.

As a result of the "Proof of Concept" project we learned:
•    Compact shelving can reduce the additional square footage required for the project
•    Library could be completed with a much reduced foot print and budget
•    Renovation of the existing facility and “wrapping the building” with an improved exterior and additional space is a feasible way to complete the fundraising and construction far sooner than was thought possible

Our next step in the planning process will be to complete an Architectural Concept Study beginning mid-October with a completion date of December 2010.  Key outcomes from this next phase of planning will be:
•    Confirmed program elements for the project
•    Conceptual renderings for fundraising
•    Updated total project cost estimate for fundraising

News From the Center for Academic Excellence

Dr. Virginia Lee
Dr. Virginia Lee visited Oxford College early in September to lead a number of group discussions on Inquiry Guided Learning.   In the morning, she facilitated discussion of INQ in a meeting with the faculty, and throughout the day met with other faculty groups, including members of the Inquiry Review and Development Committee.
“Such visits by scholars and consultants provide a good opportunity for faculty to interact with a person who has experience and knowledge of a particular area that Oxford faculty are exploring,” said Jeff Galle, Director of the Center for Academic Excellence at Oxford College.

Student Employee of the Month

Carrielee Crenshaw
Our September student employee of the month is Carrielee Crenshaw, a sophomore from Newnan, Georgia. Carrielee is trustworthy, and dependable. She can be counted on to be at work on time, every time, and to perform any task given with a smile and never a complaint. Thank you for all you do, Carrielee!

Library Displays

Come to the library this month to see several exciting displays we have set up for you! First, we have on display several artifacts from Nancy Bowen's collection of Meso-American items celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Next, it's Banned Books Week in October - did you know some of your favorite books were once banned? Come by the library to see what some have considered "offensive" materials throughout the years.

October is also Georgia Archives Month. Come by the library in later October to see items on display from the Oxford College archives!
